Before we meet the plants, it is worth understanding what we are actually asking them to do. The phrase “climate resilient” can feel like marketing language — another way of saying drought-tolerant, perhaps, or low-maintenance. But the genuine meaning is more specific, and more useful.

A climate-resilient perennial is one that can handle the range of conditions a UK garden now routinely throws at it. Not just summer drought, but the soggy autumn that follows. Not just one or two hard frosts, but the mild, damp winters that encourage rot and fungal issues. Not just wind, but the sudden summer storms that arrive with little warning and flatten anything with a hollow stem.

Echinacea, salvia, verbena, sedum, and achillea form a genuinely complete border in terms of season, height, and texture.
